SECTION 01541 PROTECTION OF THE WORK AND PROPERTY 6 . Explore ahead of trenching and excavation work and uncover all obstructing underground structures sufficiently to determine their location , to prevent damage to them and to prevent interruption of the services which such structures provide . If CONTRACTOR damages an underground structure , restore it to original condition at CONTRACTOR' s expense . 7 . Necessary changes in the location of the Work may be made by ENGINEER , to avoid unanticipated underground structures . 8 . If permanent relocation of an underground structure or other subsurface facility is required and is not otherwise provided for in the Contract Documents , ENGINEER will direct CONTRACTOR in writing to perform the Work , which shall be paid for under the provisions of Article 11 of the General Conditions , B . Surface Structures : 1 . Surface structures are defined as structures or facilities above the ground surface . Included with such structures are their foundations and any extension below the surface . Surface structures include , but are not limited to , buildings , tanks , walls , bridges , roads , dams , channels , open drainage , piping , poles , wires , posts , signs , markers , curbs , walks and all other facil - ities that are visible above the ground surface . C . Protection of Underground and Surface Structures : 1 . Sustain in their places and protect from direct or indirect injury , all underground and surface structures located within or adjacent to the limits of the Work . Such sustaining and supporting shall be done carefully , and as required by the party owning or controlling such structure . Before proceeding with the work of sustaining and supporting such structure , satisfy the ENGINEER that the methods and procedures to be used have been approved by the party owning same . 2 . Assume all risks attending the presence or proximity of all underground and surface structures within or adjacent to the limits of the Work . CONTRACTOR shall be responsible for all damage and expense for direct or indirect injury caused by its Work to any structure . CONTRACTOR shall repair immediately all damage caused by his work , to the satisfaction of the OWNER of the damaged structure . D . All other existing surface facilities , including but not limited to , guard rails , posts , guard cables , signs , poles , markers , and curbs which are temporarily removed to facilitate installation of the Work shall be replaced and restored to their original condition at CONTRACTOR' S expense . 01541 -4 F :\Engineering\Capital Projects\0744 - 8th St Sidewalk from U .
