1 <br />EXISTING TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES: <br />Road System - The existing road system is inadequate to meet <br />anticipated future growth. Functions of existing major roads, <br />and the expected impacts are briefly described below: <br />U.S. Highway #1 - This is the primary north -south route through <br />the County. Development activity in the County currently places <br />stress on services along this major arterial. Frequent <br />uncontrolled access to this corridor reduces its capacity. <br />State Road 60 - This is a primary east -west route with four and <br />six lanes, from U.S. #1 to I-95, having adequate capacity to <br />serve present and limited future needs. As development expands <br />in the urban service area, additional east -west routes will be <br />required. <br />State Road A -1-A - State Road A"l1 A is the only beach <br />thoroughfare. The narrow breadth of the Barrier Island makes <br />development of alternate north -south routes impractical. <br />Therefore, SR A -1-A must bear the major burden of new growth <br />demand, along with the three existing bridges that link the <br />island to the mainland. <br />SR 607 and CR 505A - SR 607 (Twenty -Seventh Avenue) provides <br />access from the rapidly developing south County area to SR 60 and <br />to St. Lucie County. CR 505A (Kings Highway) links CR 510 <br />(Wabasso Road) to the current edge of Vero Beach and to St. Lucie <br />County. In addition to servicing future development, Kings <br />Highway will also be viewed as an alternative to U.S. #1 for <br />through traffic. <br />CR 606, 12th Street & 16th Street - These streets are east -west <br />routes connecting U.S. #1 and serving the south County. CR 606 <br />(Oslo Road) is classified as aA major arterial, connecting U.S. <br />#1 and I-95. Twelfth Street is anticipated to serve as an <br />alternate to SR 60 for east -west County traffic. <br />Sixteenth/Seventeenth Streets, currently operating near capacity, <br />serve traffic to the beach, Vero Beach High School, and the <br />recreation complex. <br />CODING: Words in OUAOX flViA type are deletions from existing <br />law.
