I 11610-7 <br />RESOLUTION 2007- 156 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, <br />FLORIDA, IN SUPPORT OF REVENUES GENERATED BY <br />THE DEPARTMENT OF CITRUS ADVERTISING TRUST <br />FUND. <br />WHEREAS, Indian River County is known around the world for its citrus; and <br />WHEREAS, citrus growers, packers and shippers have been one of Indian River <br />County's most important industries since the County's inception; and <br />WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Citrus has promoted Florida citrus <br />internationally and has educated people throughout the world as to the benefits and <br />nutritional value of citrus; and <br />WHEREAS, the Florida citrus industry provides $9 billion impact on our State's <br />economy and much of that impact is felt at the local level; and <br />WHEREAS, the Florida citrus industry provides employment to over 90,000 <br />Floridians; and <br />WHEREAS, the citrus industry in Indian River County provides a $500 million <br />impact on our economy and accounts for 15% of the County's work force annually; and <br />WHEREAS, the promotions and advertisements are paid by the Department with <br />proceeds derived from a tax assessed on every box or citrus harvested from <br />commercial groves; and <br />WHEREAS, the Department of Citrus receives all most all of their operating <br />funds from the "box tax" on commercially harvested citrus and not from State of Florida <br />General Fund tax revenues; and <br />WHEREAS, in recent years, Florida citrus growers have faced the challenges of <br />citrus canker, citrus greening and hurricanes and it therefore is vitally important to the <br />citrus industry to retain all possible sources of revenue for self preservation and <br />promotion in order to ensure the survival of Florida citrus for future citizens; and <br />WHEREAS, it was never intended for the Department of Citrus "box tax" to a be <br />a source of general revenue for the State of Florida rather it has always been intended <br />for use to further promote Florida citrus, and <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners <br />of Indian River County, that they whole heartedly support the continued use of revenue <br />generated by the Department of Citrus to remain with the Department for promotion and <br />
