6 <br />JUN 2 31976 <br />ON MOTION BY COMMISSIONER SCHMUCKER, SECONDED BY COMMISSIONER <br />Loy, THE BOARD UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED RESOLUTION N0. 76-45. <br />RESOLUTION NO. 76-45 <br />RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT THE UNITED STATES <br />CONGRESS REVIEW VETERANS EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS; <br />AND EXTEND THE BENEFIT TIME BEYOND MAY 31, 1976 <br />FOR THOSE ELIGIBLE VETERANS THAT WERE RELEASED <br />FROM ACTIVE SERVICE ON OR BEFORE JANUARY 31, <br />1955; DIRECTING COPIES OF THIS RESOLUTION TO <br />BE SENT TO OUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES. <br />WHEREAS, Section 1662 of Title 38; United States Code, <br />provides that after May 31-, 1976 no educational assistance will <br />be granted to eligible Veterans who were released from active <br />service prior to January 31, 1955; and <br />WHEREAS, Veterans serve their country honorably with <br />much personal sacrifice; and <br />WHEREAS, a college education not only benefits.the <br />individual but also the country,as a whole; and <br />WHEREAS, the cost of a college education has increased <br />dramatically; and <br />WHEREAS, the state of the economy is depressed resulting <br />in -high unemployment; and <br />WHEREAS, the educational benefits will shortly be <br />terminating for those Veterans released from active service <br />prior to January 31, 1955. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, in regular <br />meeting duly assembled this 23 day of June, 1976, that <br />this Board respectfully requests that the Congress of the <br />United States carefully review all Bills dealing with <br />Veterans educational benefits and extend the time for affording <br />educational assistance to those eligible Veterans released <br />from active service prior to January 31, 1955. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this Resolution <br />be forwarded to the Veterans Administration, United States <br />
