BE DONE ON A BASIS OF NATURE STUDIES. HE NOTED THAT THEY WORK WITH <br />SCHOOL CHILDREN AT THE 4TH GRADE LEVEL. MR. WINELAND NOTED THAT THIS <br />LAND WAS DEDICATED FOR RECREATIONAL. PURPOSES ONLY BY THE. STATE OF FLORIDA <br />AND PROBABLY WE WOULD HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE STATE AND SEE IF IT COULD <br />BE A JOINT VENTURE WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR. <br />AGENT WINELAND CONTINUED THAT -THEY OPERATE BOAT TOURS FOR THE 4TH <br />GRADE CHILDREN AND HAVE TO HAUL THEIR BOAT A CONSIDERABLE DISTANCE. THEY <br />ARE NOW TAKING BIDS ON A PONTOON BO:,i WITH APPROXIMATELY A 50 -PERSON <br />. f <br />CAPACITY AND WOULD LIKE TO BULLD A BOAT HOUSE AND BOAT RAM <br />r <br />INTERGOVERNMENTAL COORDINATOR THOMAS STATED HE FELT THE SCHOOL BOARD <br />WOULD HAVE A VERY DEFINITE INTEREST IN WORKING ON THIS PROJECT FOR NATURE <br />STUDIES. HE POINTED OUT THE FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE IS PRIMARILY IN- <br />VOLVED IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND PROTECTING AND PROMOTING ENJOYMENT <br />OF THE WILDLANDS AND WILDLIFE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. <br />MR. THOMAS NOTED THAT THIS LAND WAS ALL MANGROVE AT ONE TIME, BUT SOME <br />YEARS AGO A GOOD DEAL OF SPOIL WAS PUT IN THERE, AND THERE -ARE NOW 10 <br />TO 12 ACRES THAT ARE HIGH GROUND. ;!E ALSO NOTED THAT SOME OF THE LOCAL <br />P"ZOPLE USE IT FOR AN t1NAlJTH0R17Fn NIMP. <br />AGENT WINELAND FELT THIS IS THE TIME TO STOP THAT PRACTICE BEFORE IT <br />BUILDS UP. <br />COMMISSIONER LOY ASKED WHETHER WE COULD BE ASSURED THAT THERE WOULD <br />AE A PUBLIC RAMP WITH ADEQUATE PARKING DEVELOPED IN THAT AREA AND POSSIBLY <br />HAVE SOME PICNIC AREA AS SHE WOULD LIKE TO BE SURE THE FARM BUREAU WOULD <br />-CONCUR WITH THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT, <br />AGENT WINELAND STATED THAT THEY PROPOSE THAT IT BE A PUBLIC FACILITY <br />OF THIS TYPE, BUT NOTED THAT FOR ADEQUATE PARKING SPACE SOME TREES WILL <br />HAVE TO BE REMOVED AND THE FISH & WILDLIFE SERVICE.IS OPPOSED TO REMOVING <br />ANY MORE THAN NECESSARY. <br />' IN FURTHER DISCUSSION, IT WAS NOTED THAT THERE IS A PUBLIC LAUNCHING <br />9 <br />RAMP LOCATED JUST TO THE WEST OF THIS AREA, AND IF THE FISH & WILDLIFE <br />SERVICE SHOULD BUILD A BOATHOUSE FOR THEIR PONTOON BOAT, POSSIBLY THE <br />MONEY COULD BE SPENT ON NATURE TRAILS AND PICNIC FACILITIES RATHER THAN <br />ANOTHER BOAT RAMP. <br />`COMMISSIONER SIEBERT ASKED IF THEY INTEND TO HAVE THISA SUPERVISED, <br />AREA AS HE WAS SURE THE PEOPLE ON ORCHID ISLAND WOULD BE CONCERNED, <br />11 <br />APR, 61977 R r �� .x.67 <br />
