ATTORNEY GREEN NOTED THAT THERE ARE FIVE TROOPERS CURRENTLY <br />ASSIGNED TO INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, AND THEY ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE <br />SAFETY OPERATION IN THIS COUNTY. MR. GREEN THEN EXPLAINED THE PRESENT <br />PROCEDURE THE TROOPERS MUST FOLLOW IN ORDER TO CONTACT A DEPUTY SHERIFF <br />DIRECTLY, WHICH PROCEDURE CAUSES DELAYS'AND CAN HAVE SERIOUS <br />CONSEQUENCES, HE STATED THAT THE TOTAL AMOUNT REQUESTED WOULD BE <br />$5,705.00, WHICH INCLUDES A MAINTENANCE CONTRACT FOR TWO.YEARS. THE <br />RADIOS WOULD BE HELD IN THE NAME OF THE COUNTY, BUT WOULD BE <br />MONITORED BY THE HIGHWAY PATROL TROOPERS. MR. GREEN INFORMED THE BOARD <br />THAT SHERIFF .JOYCE CONCURS WITH THIS REQUEST. <br />CHAIRMAN VfODTKE ASKED IF THESE PORTABLE UNITS CAN BE <br />UTILIZED WHILE THE TROOPER IS TRAVELING. <br />TROOPER SICKMAN STATED THAT THEY CAN AND THAT THEY WILL REACH <br />TO THE MORTH COUNTY LINE AND PERHAPS S MILES WEST OF TOWN. <br />DISCUSSION FOLLOWED IN REGARD TO THE NEED FOR FOUR CHANNELS. <br />MR. GREEN EXPLAINED THAT THESE RADIOS HAVE THE CAPABILITY FOR FOUR <br />CRYSTALS, AND IF THE PATROLMAN WAS OUT OF HIS CAR, HE WOULD BE ABLE <br />TO COMMUNICATE NOT ONLY WITH THE DEPUTY SHERIFFS, BUT ALSO WITH HIS <br />OWN SUPERIORS, THE EXTRA CHANNELS JUST GIVE THEM EXTRA CAPABILITIES. <br />ATTORNEY COLLINS ASKED HOW IT HAS EVOLVED THAT THE STATE <br />TROOPERS CAN'T COMMUNICATE DIRECTLY WITH THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, <br />AND SHERIFF JOYCE EXPLAINED THAT MOST SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENTS ARE ON <br />HIGH FREQUENCY WHILE ALL STATE TROOPERS ARE ON LOW FREQUENCY, AND <br />THUS THEY ARE NOT COMPATIBLEIALTHOUGH.POSSIBLY THIS SITUATION MAY <br />CHANGE IN THE FUTURE. <br />e <br />MR. GREEN NOTED THAT IN THE EVENT THE HIGHWAY PATROL'S <br />COMMUNICATONS EVER DO BECOME COMPATIBLE WITH THE SHERIFF'S, THESE <br />UNITS WOULD BE OWNED BY THE COUNTY AND COULD BE GIVEN TO THE SHERIFF <br />AT THAT TIME BECAUSE THEY WILL BE COMPATIBLE WITH HIS EQUIPMENT. <br />CHAIRMAN WODTKE INQUIRED ABOUT THE TIME NECESSARY TO <br />TRANSFER CALLS, AND TROOPER SICKMAN INFORMED HIM THAT THEY HAVE ONE <br />DISPATCHER WHO HANDLES FOUR COUNTIES, AND THE TIMING WOULD DEPEND <br />ON THE PRIORITY THE CALL WOULD TAKE AND WHETHER OR NOT THE LINES <br />WERE TIED UP, <br />MAY 2 4 1978 goo 35 PACE On <br />
