u <br />INTERIM, WINN DIXIE WENT. TO ANOTHER DEVELOPER, REDUCED THE SIZE OF <br />THE SHOPPING CENTER, AND IS NOW BUILDING AT THE INTERSECTION OF ROSELAND <br />ROAD AND U.S. 1. MR. SCHLITT NOTED THAT HIS GROUP CAN GO AHEAD AND <br />DEVELOP THEIR PROPERTY COMMERCIALLY AT.THE PRESENT TIME BECAUSE THE <br />ZONING HAS NOT YET CHANGED, BUT THEY ARE INTERESTED IN THE PROPER <br />4 <br />DEVELOPMENT OF THE NORTH PART OF THE COUNTY, EVEN IF IT.MEANS A FINANCIAL <br />LOSS TO THEM. MR. SCHLITT STATED THEY BELIEVE THAT BETWEEN THE HIGHWAY <br />AND THE RAILROAD, THE HIGHEST AND BEST USE IS UNDOUBTEDLY COMMERCIAL, <br />AND HE WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT LEFT THIS WAY, BUT IF IT IS THE COUNTY'S <br />FEELINGS THAT THE CHANGE HAS TO BE MADE, THEN THEY WOULD LIKE TO WORK <br />WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF WHAT THEY CAN JUSTIFY AS A PROPER WAY TO DEVELOP <br />THIS LAND. HE POINTED OUT THAT THIS PROPERTY WAS ACQUIRED SUBJECT TO <br />A GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT THAT.A SHOPPING CENTER WOULD BE DEVELOPED ON <br />IT. HE DID NOT FEEL, HOWEVER, IT IS WISE PLANNING TO GO IN AND PUT JUST <br />ANY COMMERCIAL BUILDING ON A PIECE OF PROPERTY THAT COULD BE USED FAR <br />MORE WISELY TO MEET THE NEEDS OF A GROWING COMMUNITY. HE CONTINUED <br />THAT HE WOULD NOT LIKE TO SEE A GROUP TRYING TO DEVELOP IN THE RIGHT <br />WAY GET SHUT OUT BEFORE THEY CAN GET THEIR PLANNING UNDER WAY. <br />ED WARD, PRESIDENT OF THE ROSELAND PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION, <br />CAME BEFORE THE BOARD. HE REGRETTED THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE AS MANY <br />PEOPLE OUT TODAY AS THEY NORMALLY DO, BUT NOTED MOST OF THEIR MEMBERS <br />ARE WORKING PEOPLE. SOME WERE HERE AT II:00 O'CLOCK AND, UNFORTUNATELY, <br />HAD TO LEAVE WHEN THE DISCUSSION WAS DEFERRED TO A LATER HOUR. HE <br />STATED HE WILL TRY TO EXPLAIN ONCE AGAIN, AND THIS IS THE THIRD TIME, <br />THE ATTITUDE OF THE RESIDENTS OF THE ROSELAND, AREA. HE NOTED THAT THEY <br />ARE TALKING ABOUT THE PRESENT AND NOT WHAT HAS BEEN HISTORICAL. THEY <br />ARE CONCERNED IN THE ROSELAND AREA NOT ABOUT STOPPING THE GROWTH OF THE <br />AREA, BUT CONTROLLING IT. THE AMOUNT OF COMMERCIAL AREA ALONG U.S. I <br />HAS LONG BEEN MUCH TOO GREAT, AND ACCORDING TO FIGURES GIVEN OUT AT ONE <br />OF THE HEARINGS, THERE WAS ENOUGH AREA SET ASIDE AS COMMERCIAL TO SERVE <br />THE NEEDS OF THE ENTIRE COUNTY TO THE YEAR 2000. MR. WARD STATED IF THE <br />AREA IS ALLOWED TO GROW BEYOND THE CURRENT PLAN, IT WILL OVERTAX ROSE - <br />LAND ROAD, WHICH IS A TWO-LANE FEEDER ROAD, AND IT WILL CHANGE THE <br />ENTIRE ATMOSPHERE AND CHARACTER OF THE TOWNSITE OF ROSELAND.
