FATHER ART BENDIXON OF THE MINISTRY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE, DIOCESE
OF ORLANDO, STATED THAT THEY HAVE BECOME AWARE OF THE CRITICAL HOUSING
SITUATION IN THE GIFFORD AREA, AS WELL AS IN WABASSO. THE CATHOLIC
CHURCH HAS TAUGHT THAT EACH COMMUNITY MUST BE RESPONSIBLE TO MAKE DECENT
HOUSING AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE, AND HE IS HERE TO SPEAK IN FAVOR OF THE
CREATION OF A LOCAL HOUSING AUTHORITY TO PROMOTE DECENT HOUSING FOR
THOSE IN THE COUNTY WHO ARE OF A LOW INCOME.
MS. OSSIE JACKSON, OF THE GIFFORD PROGRESSIVE CIVIC LEAGUE,
SPOKE IN FAVOR OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A HOUSING AUTHORITY. SHE FELT
WITH PROPER SUPERVISION SUCH A PROJECT CAN ENHANCE AND BEAUTIFY THE
COMMUNITY, AND CITED AS AN EXAMPLE, A PROJECT IN BREVARD COUNTY. SHE
INFORMED THE BOARD THAT THE APPLICANTS ARE CAREFULLY SCREENED AND THERE-
FORE, THE MYTH OF ATTRACTING UNDESIRABLES IS UNFOUNDED. MS. JACKSON
NOTED THAT POOR HOUSING BREEDS CRIME AND STATED THAT A HOUSING AUTHORITY,
BY SUPPLYING ADEQUATE LOW RENT HOUSING, CAN HELP PRODUCE GOOD CITIZENS.
FATHER RYAN OF ST. HELEN'S CHURCH READ INTO THE RECORD THE
FOLLOWING LETTER:
Booz 41 Fact, 148
JUL 17 1979 i
