CAAC’ <br />ONSIDERATION OF THE GRICULTURAL DVISORY OMMITTEES <br />RIP <br />ECOMMENDATION ON DENTIFICATION AND LUGGING OF <br />AAWNDS <br />BANDONED RTESIAN ELLS ON EW EVELOPMENT ITES <br /> <br />Chief of Environmental Planning Roland DeBlois stated that County Environmental <br />Planning & St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) staff had attended a County <br />Agricultural Advisory Committee (AAC) meeting in October 2006 to discuss abandoned and/or <br />leaky artesian wells that are often found on new development sites and their potential impacts to <br />the shallow aquifer. <br /> <br />Mr. DeBlois disclosed that since 1989 there has been a well plugging partnership <br />between the St. Johns River Water Management District and Indian River County. He advised <br />that there was concern with active wells possibly being corroded below ground level, and that a <br />capped well could possibly be leaking and leading to salt water intrusion. Mr. DeBlois supported <br />the AAC’s recommendation for the Commission to direct staff to maintain and to try to enhance its <br />diligence in identifying and controlling artesian wells found on development sites. <br /> <br />May 15, 2007 14 <br /> <br />
