Engineer, Tanhum Goldshmid.
Dr. Goldshmid noted the Department of
Environmental Protection is considering a change
to make such a landfill gas control system
mandatory. These gases are dangerous and can
ignite or explode. They also stink, are very
difficult to control, and contribute to the
greenhouse effect. However, they can also be
beneficial if used as a fuel to generate electricity.
Our Landfill gas could generate enough electricity
to supply 400 to 500 homes. Staff has discussed
this fuel use with the Correctional Facility and
Calpine Electric, and have also considered using it
to market sludge.

JUNE 19, 2001

4
S
.
W
.
D
.
D
.
