FA <br />80�K 43 PAGE 350. <br />ATTORNEY COOKSEY NOTED THAT THERE ARE EXISTING SUBDIVISIONS <br />WITHIN 1/4 MILE OF THE GLENN PROPERTY. HE FELT ONE OF THE MOST IMPOR- <br />TANT FACTS IS THAT THIS PROPERTY WAS FORMERLY ZONED FOR RESIDENTIAL <br />PURPOSES AND WHEN THE COUNTY ADOPTED THE PRESENT MASTER PLAN, IT <br />WAS REZONED TO AGRICULTURAL OVER THE OBJECTION OF MR. AND MRS. GLENN, <br />WHO WERE ASSURED THAT AGRICULTURAL WAS, IN EFFECT, A HOLDING CATEGORY. <br />IT IS ALSO SIGNIFICANT THAT RESIDENTIAL BORDERS THIS PROPERTY ALONG <br />THE WHOLE EAST SIDE, AND ALONG LATERAL A CANAL, WHICH IS THE DIVIDING <br />LINE BETWEEN AGRICULTURAL, IT IS RESIDENTIAL FOR ABOUT 4-1/2 MILES <br />TO THE NORTH. MR. COOKSEY POINTED OUT THAT THE REQUESTED R-lAA <br />REZONING REQUIRES 1,600 SQ, FT. FOR A HOUSE AND 16,500 SQ. FT. OF <br />LOT AREA, WHICH HE FELT, WITH SETBACK REQUIREMENTS AND ROADS WOULD <br />WORK OUT TO ABOUT 2 UNITS PER ACRE. HE NOTED THAT HE HAS HEARD SOME <br />BROKERS STATE THAT THE COUNTY HAS A NEED FOR THIS TYPE OF PROPERTY. <br />MR. COOKSEY THEN WENT ON TO DISCUSS THE HEARING BEFORE <br />THE PLANNING & ZONING COMMISSION, POINTING OUT THAT THERE WAS A 3-2 <br />VOTE AGAINST THE REZONING ALTHOUGH NO ONE PRESENT SPOKE AGAINST IT. <br />HE NOTED THAT ONE OF THE PLANNING & ZONING COMMISSIONERS MADE A VERY <br />IMPASSIONED PLEA FOR THE AGRICULTURAL USE OF LANDS IN OUR COMMUNITY <br />AND OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO FEED THE WORLD, ATTORNEY COOKSEY REPORTED <br />THAT HE PRESENTED THE FOLLOWING STATISTICS AT THE PLANNING & ZONING <br />COMMISSION HEARING;, WHICH CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED THAT THERE WAS A 40% <br />INCREASE IN THE CITRUS ACREAGE IN THE COUNTY DURING THE PERIOD FROM <br />1965 TO 1978: <br />APPROXIMATE ACRES IN CITRUS <br />1965 40,680 <br />1967 47,000 <br />1969 51,000 <br />1971 52,050 <br />1973 52,260 <br />1976-78 56,200 <br />HE POINTED OUT THAT WHILE THIS INCREASE IN CITRUS ACREAGE WAS TAKING <br />PLACE, THE POPULATION OF THE COUNTY INCREASED FROM 25,300 IN 1960 <br />TO 52,300 tN 19781 OR ABOUT 108%. MR. COOKSEY FELT THIS WAS A VERY <br />IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT THE BOARD IS BEING <br />TOLD REPEATEDLY THAT THEY ARE DESTROYING PRIME CITRUS LAND. ATTORNEY <br />
