1 S.B. S. WASTE MANAGEMENT, INC. OF FLORIDA LANDFILL OPERATIONS <br />CONTRACT <br />Himanshu Mehta, Managing Director of the Solid Waste Disposal District, recapped the <br />memorandum of June 11, 2010 to provide background and analysis on the Landfill Operations <br />Contract with Waste Management, Inc. of Florida (WMIF), which was scheduled to end on June <br />30, 2010, unless extended for seven years by mutual agreement. He explained that Waste <br />Management had requested a rate increase, and after negotiations with staff, agreed to extend its <br />current contract at the current rate through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for three <br />(3) months, through September 30, 2010. Director Mehta asked the Board to approve the MOU; <br />stated that staff could not support a rate increase given the current budget constraints; and <br />requested that the Board authorize staff to solicit contractor bids for the Class I Landfill <br />operations. <br />MOTION WAS MADE by Vice Chairman Solari, <br />SECONDED by Commissioner Flescher, to approve staffs <br />recommendation. <br />Board members acknowledged Waste Management's excellent service and expressed <br />appreciation for its cooperation with the County. <br />Commissioner Wheeler pointed out that the bids received by other contractors might be <br />equivalent to, or higher than, Waste management's desired increase, and that the landfill <br />operations were mandatory, and funded as an annual fee, not from ad valorem taxes. <br />Carolyn Corum remarking on the idea expressed earlier by Vice Chairman Solari, said <br />that once a week trash service should reduce the cost for trash pickup.
