Comprehensive Plan Conservation Element <br />Policy 7.2: The protection of critical habitat shall be measured and evaluated on a site <br />development basis. For developments on property known to support endangered or <br />threatened species of plants or animals, or on property expected to significantly contribute to <br />such species' habitat needs, the developer shall be required to notify the appropriate regional, <br />state and federal agencies and provide proper protection to the maximum extent feasible. <br />Policy 7.3: The county shall take measures, as set forth in the policies of Objective 5 and <br />Objective 6 of this element, to protect significant upland, wetland and deepwater <br />communities that provide habitat for threatened or endangered species, as well as non - <br />threatened, non -endangered species. <br />Policy 7A The county shall regulate land development activities, as set forth in Objectives 1, <br />7 and 16 of the Future Land Use Element. <br />Policy 7.5: By 2011, the county, in cooperation with the FDEP Bureau of Protected Species <br />and Florida Marine Patrol, shall evaluate the need to revise manatee protection and speed <br />zones in certain areas of the St. Sebastian River and the IRL, to protect the Florida manatee <br />and to promote boating safety. <br />Polic.A The county shall support state and federal land acquisition proposals throughout <br />Indian River County by adopting resolutions in support of such acquisitions, and by <br />providing "in-kind" services, such as land management. <br />Policy 7.7: The county shall protect nesting sea turtles by: <br />➢ conducting compliance inspections during sea turtle nesting season (March 1 - <br />October 31); <br />➢ providing information to beachfront residents regarding seasonal lighting regulations <br />and alternative methods of artificial lighting; <br />➢ prohibiting nighttime construction activity associated with rigid shoreline <br />stabilization projects and new beachfront development during sea turtle nesting <br />season; <br />➢ prohibiting storage of construction materials on the beach/dune system during sea <br />turtle nesting season; <br />➢ requiring daily monitoring of sea turtle nesting activity to be conducted for all <br />shoreline stabilization projects conducted during sea turtle nesting; and <br />Community Development Department Indian River County 134 <br />
