TO: The Honorable Members of the DATE: <br />Board of County Commissioners <br />July 7, 1981 <br />book <br />FILE: <br />SUBJECT.- Vehicle Inspection Program <br />FROM: �� EFERENCES: House Bill # 101 <br />Neil Nelson <br />County A ministrator -- <br />Description & Conditions <br />As reported at the June 17, 1981 Board meeting the Legislature has passed <br />House Bill 101 repealing the "Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection" program, <br />effective October], 1981. It has been reported that Governor Graham as <br />expected, has signed the -bill into law. <br />This new law provides a local option for counties desiring to continue with <br />a safety inspection program on their own, as follows: <br />"F.S.S. 325.001 --Periodic Motor Vehicle Inspection. <br />Provisions in. the law to the contrary notwithstanding, any <br />county which chooses to have a periodic motor vehicle in- _ <br />spection program may establish one." <br />As previously reported, Indian River County has four authorized inspection <br />stations: <br />Auto Clinic of Vero Beach <br />Courtesy Auto Service, Vero Beach <br />Keller's Chevron, Vero Beach <br />Phelp's Garage & Inspection_ Station, Sebastian <br />The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles has reported the following in- <br />spection certificates -issued for Indian River County: <br />1979 - 42,258 <br />1980 45,657. <br />Based upon current inspection fee of $3.00, delinquent charge of $1.00 and <br />sticker cost of $.40, the program has generated the following estimated <br />revenues during the past two years: <br />Inspection Station <br />Net Inspection Fees <br />1979 $109,871.00 <br />1980 $118,708.00 <br />Alternative and Analysis <br />The County appears to have three basic options: <br />State of Florida <br />Sticker Charges Delinquent Fees <br />516,903.00 <br />518,263.00 <br />I. Take no action, allowing the inspection program to lapse on <br />October 1, 1981. <br />II. Pass local ordinance establishing inspection program for Indian <br />River County.
