MONDAY, AUGUST 10, 1981 <br />THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, <br />FLORIDA, MET IN SPECIAL SESSION AT THE CITY HALL COUNCIL CHAMBERS, <br />1053 20TH PLACE, VERO BEACH, FLORIDA, ON MONDAY, AUGUST 10, 1981, AT <br />2:15 O'CLOCK P.M. PRESENT WERE PATRICK B. LYONS, CHAIRMAN; <br />WILLIAM C. WODTKE, .JR., VICE CHAIRMAN; DICK BIRD, ALFRED GROVER <br />FLETCHER, AND DON C. SCURLOCK, .JR. ALSO PRESENT WERE NEIL A. NELSON, <br />COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR; R. STEPHEN HOULIHAN, ASSISTANT ATTORNEY TO THE <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS; AND JANICE CALDWELL, DEPUTY CLERK. <br />THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS THEREUPON RECESSED AT <br />2:15 O'CLOCK P.M. IN ORDER THAT THE DISTRICT BOARD OF FIRE COMMIS— <br />SIONERS OF THE SOUTH INDIAN RIVER COUNTY FIRE DISTRICT MIGHT CONVENE. <br />MINUTES OF THAT MEETING WILL BE PREPARED SEPARATELY. <br />THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS THEREUPON RECONVENED AT <br />2:18 O'CLOCK P.M. WITH THE SAME MEMBERS PRESENT. <br />THE CHAIRMAN CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ANNOUNCED THAo <br />IT WAS CALLED FOR THE PURPOSE OF DISCUSSING THE CONTRACT FOR THE <br />FIRE FIGHTERS OF THE SOUTH COUNTY FIRE DTSTRICT. HE CONTINUED THAT <br />THE BOARD'S BARGAINING AGENT HAD DONE WELL, HE FOLLOWED THE WISH OF <br />THE COMMISSION, AND THE SETTLEMENT WAS IN LINE. THE CHAIRMAN STATED <br />THAT IT WILL BE A POSITIVE ACT, ON THE PART OF THE COMMISSION, THAT <br />THEY DO NOT PLAN TO APPROVE ANY GENERAL INCREASES THAT WOULD EXCEED <br />THE INCREASES THAT ARE OUTLINED IN THIS PARTICULAR CONTRACT. <br />COMMISSIONER SCURLOCK FELT THIS WAS IMPORTANT AS THE BOARD <br />IS CHARGED WITH LOOKING AT THE TOTAL BUDGET. REGARDING WAGES, HE <br />CONTINUED, THERE IS AN INTERRELATIONSHIP AND TRYING TO BALANCE WHAT <br />THE COMMUNITY CAN AFFORD IS NOT AN EASY TASK; WE WOULD ALL LIKE TO <br />FAIRLY COMPENSATE OUR EMPLOYEES. COMMISSIONER SCURLOCK STATED THAT <br />THE COUNTY'S PURSE STRINGS ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE AT HOME,.AND WITH <br />THIS ARRANGEMENT, WE WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE AN ADEQUATE COMPENSATION <br />FOR EMPLOYEES, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE BOARD MAKE IT KNOWN THAT THIS <br />AUG 101991 47 PAGE S8 <br />
