After all this, the DER makes their own <br />review, which must come back to the County Commission and be <br />read into the Minutes. Mr. Thomas then talked about <br />stabilization of the bank in the area of the marina. He <br />noted that the road is being eaten away now because of the <br />high energy situation caused by the wake of passing boats. <br />To solve this problem, he is proposing planting mangroves in <br />terraced boxes which would provide a wooden breakwater to <br />protect them until they get established. In regard to <br />dredging, Mr. Thomas noted that the river bottom in this <br />location is not covered with marine grasses, but is only <br />shd1l and sand because of the high energy situation. <br />Commissioner Bird inquired about the 5 acre nature <br />park, and Mr. Thomas felt it would offer an excellent <br />environmental education area. <br />Chairman Scurlock asked Dr. Christensen if he could <br />make the statement that there will be no degradation to the <br />Indian River from this marina, and Dr. Christensen believed <br />this could be done. <br />The Chairman asked if anyone present wished to be <br />heard. <br />Ruth Stanbridge, chairman of the Nature Trails <br />Committee for the Pelican Audubon Society, submitted a <br />letter dated January 14, 1982, supporting a unanimous vote <br />of the Transportation Planning Committee to recommend that <br />Jungle Trail be left untouched and preserved as a scenic <br />trail.
