FEB 171982 oK 48 P E 857 <br />Some discussion ensued as to the possibility of moving <br />the building, but it was not felt this would be economically <br />feasible. <br />Mr. Hooper, chairman of the Salvation Army, wished to <br />clear up some misconceptions. He informed the Board that <br />the Salvation Army has no objection to the DAV taking the <br />whole building. The Salvation Army is only in a position to <br />rent one room of a small size, and could not rent the <br />building at a competitive rent. Mr. Hooper agreed that <br />their functions have been limited in the past month because <br />they did not know where they are going to be permanently <br />located and they are having trouble getting a permanent <br />welfare worker, but stated that he is authorized to sign <br />checks. He reported that last year they handled $6,000 in <br />welfare cases which the county did not feel were legitimate; <br />they bought prescriptions, bus tickets for emergencies, <br />supplied clothing for burned -out people, etc. Mr. Hooper <br />noted that anyone who wants to can make a designated gift to <br />Indian River County, and it will stay here; in addition, the <br />70% which does leave the county is not lost to the county <br />since it does come back when emergencies arise. Mr. Hooper <br />informed the Board that they just want a small space where <br />they can keep a welfare worker or a series of volunteers; an <br />office space of 10 x 10 and probably twice that size for <br />storage would be sufficient. <br />It was noted that' the room in the County Administra- <br />tion Building beside the present Welfare Office fits that <br />description almost exactly, and there are racks in there to <br />hang clothes. <br />The Administrator explained that that space was <br />designedforthat purpose - the only problem is that he <br />would have to have authorization from the Board to give this <br />space to the Salvation Army without any rent. The Attorney <br />has said the Board could waive the rent, and then the <br />28 <br />
