IMPINORM <br />840K RAE 37.4 <br />Commissioner Lyons stated that he was very active with <br />the Audubon Society and this had been their goal - to <br />provide some place for environmental education. He was <br />anxious to find some way for the Society to have this <br />educational facility. <br />Commissioner Bird stated that the Society would like to <br />develop this as an environmental educational center and <br />conduct continuing education programs. He felt that the <br />remainder of the island could be used for public purposes, <br />such as picnic areas, and nature walks. Commissioner Bird <br />reported that he asked Assistant County Attorney Chris Paull <br />to do some research concerning the receipt of title from the <br />State of Florida, Attorney Paull felt this proposal would <br />not be in any violation, but recommended obtaining a formal <br />opinion on the matter. Commissioner Bird -felt a letter from <br />the County could be sent to the Trustees of the State <br />concerning this proposal. He advised that the Recreation <br />Committee felt this should be pursued - the basic idea would <br />be that this would be; open for the public's benefit and <br />there would be no fees charged for the use of these <br />facilities. Commissioner Bird stated that an organization <br />such as the Audubon Society has been a benefit to the <br />County, and could be more of a benefit if they had this <br />proposed facility. <br />Chairman Scurlock thought that it was a great idea. <br />Commissioner Wodtke felt there may be some files and <br />drawings available concerning this property, as it had been <br />investigated over the years for possible use by the school <br />system. <br />Motion was made by Commissioner Lyons, seconded by <br />Commissioner Fletcher, that the County indicate its interest <br />and encouragement to the Audubon Society in having such a <br />facility, and that the Attorney and his staff be authorized <br />to continue negotiations with the thought of ending up with <br />
