JUN 21982 <br />P R O C L A M A T I O N <br />49 PA -F8,97 <br />WHEREAS, the incidence and prevalence of child abuse and neglect have <br />reached alarming proportions in the United States; and <br />WHEREAS, an estimated two million children become victims of child <br />abuse in this Nation each year; and <br />WHEREAS, an estimated five thousand of these children die as a result <br />b• <br />of such abuse each year; and <br />WHEREAS, the Nation faces a continuing need to support innovative pro- - <br />grams to prevent child abuse and assist parents and family <br />members in which child abuse occurs; and <br />WHEREAS, Congress has expressed its commitment to seeking and applying <br />solutions to this problem by enacting the Child Abuse Prevention <br />and Treatment Act of 1974; and <br />WHEREAS, many dedicated individuals and private organizations including <br />the National Exchange Club Foundation for the Prevention of <br />Child Abuse, Parent Anonymous, the National Committee for <br />the prevention of Child Abuse, American Humane Association, <br />and other members of the National Child Abuse Coalition, are <br />working to counter the ravages of abuse and neglect and to <br />help child abusers break their destructive pattern of behavior; <br />WHEREAS, organizations, such as the National Exchange Club Foundation <br />for the Prevention of Child Abuse, Parents Anonymous and • <br />other members of the National Child Abuse Coalition are <br />expediting efforts to prevent child abuse in the next <br />generation through special programs for abused children; and <br />WHEREAS, it is appropriate to focus the Nation's attention upon the <br />problem of child abuse; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, Don C. Scurlock, Jr., Chairman of the Board of County <br />Commissioners of Indian River County, proclaim that the week of <br />June 6, 1982 through June 12, 1982 be designated as "National <br />Child Abuse Prevention Week" and urge all citizens of Indian <br />River County to observe the week with appropriate programs, <br />ceremonies, and activities. <br />ATTEST: <br />eda rigs/t, r <br />L/ <br />Don C.
