Mrs. Neville then <br />. spoke of how difficult it is for many retired people who <br />have not been able to keep pace with inflation to purchase a <br />home. She emphasized that these people have found happiness <br />in mobile home communities such as Village Green and they <br />contribute much to our economy. In regard to using this land <br />for ipdustrial purposes, Mrs. Neville stressed that this <br />interchange is the front door to Vero Beach for most people <br />coming to Vero Beach for the first time, and she felt there <br />is a lot of land in other areas that can be used for <br />industrial purposes which would not offend newcomers to the <br />county. She could not understand why MD -1 was extended west <br />of I-95 if it was not intended to be used for multiple <br />housing and commented that former Planning Director Val <br />Brennan had felt that the best use of this area for many <br />years to come was mobile home use, with the possibility of <br />considering multiple family in the future. Mrs. Neville <br />urged that the Board consider the lack of low cost housing <br />and approve the requested rezoning. <br />- W.E. "Kinky" Orth, co-owner of New Hibiscus'Airptrt,—- <br />took the floor and informed the Board that the reason he and <br />Mr. Lysne moved their airport out to this area was because <br />of the development that had grown up around them. He <br />continued that they searched for two years to find a piece <br />of land that would satisfy the FAA and the DOT; they have a <br />two million dollar investment and they were there first. <br />Although the north side of SR 60 is zoned residential, there <br />is about an 800' buffer, and if there had been a mobile home <br />development adjacent to them, he did not believe their <br />airport would have been able to obtain approval from the <br />FAA. Mr. Orth stated that he would welcome industry, <br />agriculture or light manufacturing, which is what was <br />designated when they bought the property. He felt strongly <br />65 <br />
