"Tommy" Thomas J f <br />Director, Division of Comm1 nity Services <br />UVJI.CT: Veterinarian*Charges to Indian River County <br />As you-:now,.the Division of Community_ Services was assigned <br />the Animal Control Departmen-t on October 1, 1983, We are now <br />making every effort to implement and enforce Indian River Col-inty <br />Is <br />Inimal Control Ordinance No. 83-22, which went into effect June <br />27, 1983. .•:e appreciate the excellent cooperation which we are <br />receiving from all the veterinarians in the county - we also know <br />that we cannot do a satisfactory job without this cooperation. <br />.,ocause of this we are asking you to help us keep all veterinarian <br />charges to a minimum. 4.e have a very limited budget for fiscal <br />year: 1983-1984 (October 1, 1983 to September 30, 1964). I have <br />rIi^cussed this matter with the director of the Humane Society, <br />Mrs. Joan Carlson, and she feels that only emergency services to <br />sustain fife and treat contagions should be rendered to animals <br />that will be transferred to the humane Society. The county is not <br />in a position to pay for extensive X -ray -c-, blood tests, vitamins, <br />and other items which may be deferred until the owner of the animal <br />can be located. <br />Another area where we may be able to economize is in the matter r,f <br />boarding, whenever you feel that an animal may be released to the <br />Humane Society, if you will call Animal Control at 567-8000, Ext. <br />467, one of our men will transport the animal according to your <br />instructions. We greatly appreciate your continue coo_oeration in <br />these matters. <br />FEB 8 1984 <br />Chairman Scurlock brought up the possibility of <br />contracting with one local veterinarian to supply these <br />services during the year, and Commissioner Lyons felt this <br />could give rise to some problems as it is necessary that <br />someone be on duty 24 hours a day.
