Staff has not gotten to this yet, however, and will <br />be contacting Mr. Smith when they do. <br />Mr. Smith stated that he has measured handicapped <br />spaces and there are some that aren't 12' wide. <br />Planning Director Keating explained that when staff <br />reviews a site plan, we do require 12' and we do have <br />inspectors who look at the site to make sure that the spaces <br />are adequate, but this, of course, just applies to projects <br />built recently. As to the Donut Shoppe mentioned by Mr. <br />Smith, that is within the City limits and would not be under <br />our jurisdiction. <br />Building Director Ester Rymer believed the City has the <br />same requirements. <br />Commissioner Bird inquired what Mr. Smith meant about <br />rounding corners, and Mr. Smith explained that a wheelchair <br />cannot make a square corner; it requires a certain radius to <br />turn as they cannot jockey around easily. <br />Planning Director Keating noted that he was looking at <br />a site plan just yesterday where the handicapped ramps were <br />not close enough to the handicapped parking spaces, and he <br />also will look into the maneuverability aspect. <br />Mr. Smith felt the spaces at the Donut Shoppe are <br />illegal because the handicapped should not have to go across <br />the traffic access to get to the shop. He further noted <br />that it is required to have a sign for the handicapped <br />spaces. <br />Building Director Rymer informed the Board that her <br />department did check these signs and did check the ones Mr. <br />Smith told them about. At one time they did comply, but <br />quite frequently a business will resurface and restripe <br />their parking spaces, and the Building Department does not <br />even know it is happening since no building permits are <br />issued.
