Staff, therefore, did not <br />feel we should encourage further residential growth in that area. <br />Commissioner Scurlock believed the growth is going to take <br />place along King's Highway; there already are some nice homes <br />going up there and an effort to move out of some of the blighted <br />areas. Chairman Lyons further pointed out that just to the west <br />of this property is the City of Vero Beach. <br />Commissioner Wodtke felt most of the land in this area is <br />rural residential; he noted that we had a request for commercial <br />further north on 43rd Avenue and turned it down, but realized <br />that the jail will be in this area. <br />The Chairman asked if anyone present wished to be heard. <br />Attorney Michael O'Haire appeared representing the <br />applicant, and emphasized that this property is close to the <br />Police pistol range and will be in the area of the jail. He also <br />stressed that the area is changing, and people are actually run- <br />ning auto body shops out of their garages in this neighborhood. <br />Johnny Cooper, owner of an acre of land just north of the <br />Sarkees, stated that he had intended to build a home there, but <br />obviously the property will be more valuable as commercial and he <br />is in favor of the requested change to C-2. <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Scurlock, SECONDED <br />by Commissioner Bowman, the Board unanimously <br />closed the public hearing. <br />MOTION WAS MADE by Commissioner Scurlock, SECONDED <br />by Commissioner Bowman, to adopt Ordinance 85-1, <br />rezoning .64 acres south of S.
