_I <br />JAN 16 1985 BOOK <br />PROCLAMATION - ARBOR DAY <br />Chairman Lyons read aloud the following Proclamation, <br />designating the third week in January of each and every year as <br />NATIVE TREE AND SHRUB PRESERVATION WEEK for Indian River County <br />and gave the Proclamation to Commissioner Bowman as <br />representative of the Audubon Society. He informed the Board <br />that there will be a tree planting Friday, January 18th, at <br />Kiwanis Park Fairgrounds in commemoration of Arbor Day. <br />P R O C L A M A T I O N <br />WHEREAS, the 1945 Florida Legislature on recommendation by <br />the Florida Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry <br />declared that the third .Friday in January should be FLORIDA'S <br />ARBOR DAY: and <br />WHEREAS, native trees and shrubs, especially the Oaks and <br />Palm varieties which are prevalent in Indian -River County <br />preserve the health of our population by reducing the ever <br />increasing amounts of carbon' dioxide in the air and creating <br />oxygen essential to the survival of man; and, - <br />WHEREAS, native trees and -shrubs filter the airborne <br />pollutants and dust which are inimical. to the -.health and well <br />being of the citizens; and <br />WHEREAS, the native trees and shrubs especially when left in <br />their naturally formed clumps retain moisture in the soil and are <br />drought resistant thereby alleviating excessive and unnecessary <br />drain on our seasonal hard pressed water supply; and <br />WHEREAS, native trees and shrubs have an important role in <br />purifying water passing through the ground from the surface to <br />the ground water tables and lower aquifers; and <br />WHEREAS, the native trees and shrubs of Indian River County - <br />are a public resource of all its citizens, present and future; <br />8 <br />
