MAR 13 1985 <br />P R O C L A M A T I O N <br />BOOK 60 Par,F 5 <br />WHEREAS, the week of March 10th through 16th, 1985 is <br />being observed throughout the United States as "National Employ <br />the Older Worker Week"; and <br />WHEREAS, nearly 40 million working Americans are <br />currently middle-aged or older, holding productive positions in <br />all levels of industry and government; and <br />WHEREAS, despite a wealth of evidence that older workers <br />are among the most skilled and productive in our society, workers <br />over forty who do lose their jobs commonly have great difficulty <br />in finding new employment; and <br />WHEREAS, employer reluctance to hire these workers not <br />only creates hardships for many during the prime of their lives, <br />but also results in disproportionate public expenditures on un- <br />employment insurance for older workers and causes an insidious <br />productivity loss through the neglect of valuable skills and <br />experience; and <br />WHEREAS, "National Employ the Older Worker Week" is a <br />good time for each of us to examine our attitudes toward older <br />workers and to resolve to hire on the basis of ability, and not <br />age, as a matter of basic fairness and good business judgment. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, that the week of March 10th <br />through 16th, 1985, be observed in Indian River County as <br />"EMPLOY THE OLDER WORKER WEER" <br />in recognition of the value of older workers everywhere and the <br />need to eliminate age discrimination in the workplace. <br />BOARD 0 <br />INDIAN/ <br />COMMISSIONERS OF <br />Attest: f !� <br />BY r t XJ <br />FREDA WRIGHT J <br />Clerk of Circuit Court <br />34 <br />
