r- - <br />JUN <br />51985 <br />BOOK <br />-7 <br />Commissioner Scurlock did not believe <br />that this <br />is a matter <br />of non -participation; we do have payroll deduction and do pass <br />out the United Way pledge cards to the employees; but it is this <br />one step further that he objects to. He noted that he personally <br />would not want to be contacted in his workplace where he earns <br />his living, but he did not have any problem with payroll <br />deduction or the passing out of the literature. He did feel it <br />is bad policy to get involved with direct solicitation at the <br />workplace. <br />The Chairman informed those present that Commissioner Wodtke <br />submitted the following memo, indicating his support of the <br />once -a -year solicitation. <br />MEMORANDUM <br />TO: Board of County Commissioners <br />FROM: Commissioner William C. Wodtke, Jr. <br />DATE: June 5, 1985 <br />SUBJECT: United Way <br />These are my thoughts on the United Way item (Item 9) on <br />today's agenda. <br />The United Way organization is a strong representative for <br />community-based operations. I have been closely associated with <br />this organization in the past, and I feel that it is proper for <br />us to cooperate with the United Way in allowing them to present <br />the needs of the Community, and their organizations. <br />I might suggest that we consider once -a -year presentations <br />be made by organizations, similar to United Way, to County <br />employee representatives at a scheduled time, not to exceed a <br />total of 30 minutes. This would allow equal access to our <br />employees. <br />Chairman Lyons commented that for many years the large firm <br />he worked for believed in the solicitation business and had very <br />active campaigns and he did not have any active opposition to it. <br />He did feel, however, that it is a personnel policy and would be <br />very loath to override the Administrator's decision in the <br />matter.
