Resolution No. 98-145 <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN <br /> RIVER COUNTY,FLORIDA,SUPPORTING AN APPLICATION TO THE STATE <br /> CONSERVATION AND RECREATION LANDS PROGRAM FOR ACQUISITION OF <br /> LANDS ASSOCIATED WITH THE INDIAN RIVER LAGOON BLUEWAY PROJECT. <br /> WHEREAS, the Indian River Lagoon, a 156 mile long estuary on Florida's east <br /> coast, 22 miles of which are located in Indian River County, has been designated by <br /> the United States government as an Estuary of National Significance; and <br /> WHEREAS,the Indian River Lagoon system contains more species of plants and <br /> animals than any other estuary in North America, 36 of which animal species are rare <br /> and endangered; and <br /> i <br /> i WHEREAS, the Indian River Lagoon accounts for more than $300 million in <br /> r fishery revenues and generates more than $300 million annually in boat and marine <br /> sales; and <br /> i <br /> WHEREAS, restoration and protection of the Indian River Lagoon system, <br /> including estuarine wetlands and undeveloped riverfront upland buffers,are critical <br /> to sustain the viability of the Lagoon as a natural and economic resource; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program (IRLNEP), in <br /> conjunction with the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD), is <br /> sponsoring a Lagoon-wide application to the State Conservation and Recreation <br /> Lands (CARL) Program for State acquisition of estuarine wetlands and undeveloped <br /> upland buffers associated with the Indian River Lagoon; and <br /> WHEREAS, State purchase of Indian River Lagoon wetlands and buffers for <br /> restoration and protection purposes is in the public interest of the citizens of Indian <br /> River County and complements County efforts and objectives to preserve the <br /> environmental and economic values of the Indian River Lagoon; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br /> COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA THAT: <br /> 1. The above recitals are ratified in their entirety. <br /> 2. The Indian River County Board of County Commissioners <br /> supports the IRLNEP/SJRWMD sponsored application to the <br /> State CARL Program for State purchase of estuarine <br /> wetlands and undeveloped upland buffers associated with <br /> the Indian River Lagoon Blueway project, for resource <br /> restoration and protection purposes. <br /> THE RESOLUTION was moved for adoption by Commissioner Macht , <br /> the motion was seconded by Commissioner Eggert , and upon being put <br /> to a vote, the vote was as follows: <br /> Commissioner Fran B.
