RESOLUTION NO. 2016- nn7 <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br /> COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br /> OPPOSING THE UNITED STATES ARMY CORPS OF <br /> ENGINEERS PROPOSED PLAN TO DREDGE AND RELOCATE <br /> BULK OCEAN SAND FROM MARTIN AND ST. LUCIE <br /> COUNTIES TO MIAMI-DADE COUNTY. <br /> WHEREAS, Indian River County is located on the Atlantic Coast of Florida; <br /> WHEREAS, Indian River County has established a Beach Preservation Plan and a Beach <br /> Preservation Fund to provide strategy and funding for beach restoration activities; and <br /> WHEREAS, offshore beach compatible sand sources exist immediately offshore of Indian <br /> River County and are critical to the County's beach management program; and <br /> WHEREAS, the United States Army Corps of Engineers has proposed a plan to dredge <br /> and remove hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of bulk ocean sand from Martin and St. Lucie <br /> Counties and deposit it on Miami-Dade County beaches, and <br /> WHEREAS, The use of Martin and St. Lucie County offshore sand deposits to meet the <br /> needs of larger Counties to the south would severely impact the local area supply of a non- <br /> renewable resource, and <br /> WHEREAS, If local ocean sand deposits are exhausted from Martin and St. Lucie <br /> Counties, the demand pressure for beach compatible ocean sand could extend northward into <br /> Indian River County. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of County Commissioners of <br /> Indian River County, Florida opposes the dredging and removal of bulk ocean sand from Martin <br /> and St. Lucie Counties to Miami-Dade County, and urges the United State Army Corps of <br /> Engineers to consider use of upland and Bahamian sand sources for Miami-Dade erosion control <br /> projects. <br /> THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION was offered by Commissioner c)'Rrvan and <br /> seconded by Commissioner Flescher and, being put to a vote was as follows: <br /> Chairman, Bob Solari AYE <br /> Vice Chairman, Joseph E. Flescher AYE <br /> Commissioner Wesley S. Davis AYE <br /> Commissioner Tim Zorc AYE_ <br /> Commissioner Peter D. O'Bryan AYE <br /> The Chairman thereupon declared the resolution duly passed and adopted this 12th day <br /> Of .Tarn iary 12016. <br />
