Baird; County Administrator <br /> DEPARTMENT HEAD CONCURRENCE: <br /> Stan Boling, ; Community Development Director <br /> THROUGH: Phil Matson, AICP; MPO Staff Director�2(� <br /> FROM: Andy Sobczak, Senior Transportation Planner <br /> DATE: January 5, 2016 <br /> SUBJECT: Safe Routes to School Non-Infrastructure Grant Renewal <br /> It is requested that the information herein presented be given formal consideration by the Board of <br /> County Commissioners at its regular meeting of January 12, 2016. <br /> DESCRIPTION & CONDITIONS <br /> In an effort to improve safety for children in Indian River County, in 2010, MPO staff developed a <br /> bicycle and pedestrian safety training program. Using bicycles and safety gear donated by FDOT, <br /> MPO staff began training children at local elementary schools. <br /> Since the program was an instant success with the participating schools and children,in 2011 FDOT <br /> awarded a Safe Routes to School Non-Infrastructure Grant to the MPO in support the program. <br /> At its regular meeting on December 9,2015 the MPO approved an annual renewal of the Safe Routes <br /> to School Non-Infrastructure Grant in the amount of$64,994.00 for county staff to continue bicycle <br /> and pedestrian safety training efforts at local schools. In addition to approving the grant, the MPO <br /> authorized staff to approve annual renewals of the Safe Routes to School Non-Infrastructure Grant <br /> over the next 5 years. <br /> The account number for the Safe Routes to School Grant is: 12420415 - 035290— 14811. <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> This is an informational item only.
