INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br /> MEMORANDUM <br /> TO: Members of the Indian River County Metropolitan Planning Organization <br /> (MPO) <br /> ./06 <br /> THROUGH: Stan Boling,AICP <br /> Community Development Director <br /> FROM: Andy Sobczak4f> <br /> MPO Senior Planner <br /> DATE: November 19, 2015 <br /> SUBJECT: Approval of the MPO's Safe Routes to School Non-Infrastructure <br /> Grant Subcontract <br /> It is requested that the information presented herein be given formal consideration at <br /> the MPO meeting of December 9, 2015. <br /> DESCRIPTION AND CONDITIONS <br /> In an effort to improve safety for children in Indian River County, in 2010, MPO staff <br /> developed a bicycle and pedestrian safety training program. Using bicycles and safety <br /> gear donated by FDOT, MPO staff began training children at local elementary schools. <br /> Since the program was an instant success with the participating schools and children, in <br /> 2011 FDOT awarded a Safe Routes to School Non-Infrastructure Grant to the MPO in <br /> support the program. <br /> ANALYSIS <br /> Currently, the MPO's bicycle and pedestrian safety training program includes <br /> instruction regarding basic bicycle and pedestrian laws, on-bicycle training that <br /> includes navigation through a course with obstacles and traffic signals, Instruction on <br /> where to safety ride a bicycle, and fun skill building activities such as a bicycle 'slow <br /> race' that emphasizes balance and control on a bicycle. Each year, all fourteen public <br /> elementary schools in Indian River County, Including the charter school, participate in <br /> the program. <br /> 1 <br /> 33 <br />
