JUN <br />18 1996 <br />Bou <br />64 <br />Fnur 758 <br />the <br />Public Defenders will <br />appreciate whatever the Board <br />can do <br />to <br />bring attention to this problem. <br />Commissioner Lyons agreed emphatically that we must do <br />something to get the state legislature to realize what is <br />happening as far as caseload is concerned. He pointed out that <br />our jail projections were way off base because of the tremendous <br />increase we have experienced in criminal activity, and the <br />shortfall for the Public Defenders and State's Attorneys directly <br />affects the jail population. <br />Commissioner Wodtke commented that the state recently passed <br />a Bill <br />that <br />says <br />250 <br />of all <br />the <br />traffic violations and court <br />fines <br />will <br />go to <br />the <br />state, <br />and <br />we are going to lose that money. <br />He did not see how they can expect to combat crime if we don't <br />have the necessary personnel in the Public Defender and State's <br />Attorney offices and also not enough.judges. <br />Mr. Schwarz noted that we are all dealing with taxpayer's <br />dollars, and he believed the local counties are better equipped <br />to disburse those dollars in an appropriate manner than the <br />state, which is so much further away from it all. <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Bird, SECONDED by Com- <br />missioner Bowman, the Board unanimously adopted <br />Alternative 4 set out in the Public Defender's <br />letter dated June 17, 1986, with the addition of <br />an escape clause. <br />SEBASTIAN AREA WASTEWATER SYSTEM - REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE <br />Chairman Scurlock informed the Board of the following letter <br />he had received from Sebastian Councilman Rondeau: <br />64 <br />
