Tucker, Director, Indian River County Public Health Unit, <br />after working with the Indian River Memorial Hospital to establish <br />a unified screening proceedure for the county pretaining to Maternal <br />Child Health programs is requesting a change of the guidelines for <br />his department. The new guidelines will reflect a 1850 of the current <br />Federal Poverty level. <br />The guidelines state that "The purpose of the Maternity Program is to <br />provide pre and post -natal care for clients who are ineligible for <br />Federal or State programs, and meet the current level of the Federal - <br />Poverty Guidelines as stipulated by the Health Department". <br />I would recommend this change be made to the Welfare Guidelines. <br />Chairman Scurlock understood that the new guidelines will <br />cost the County $29,000 more a year, but felt that if proper <br />prenatal care is not given, then we face the long term expense <br />involved in taking care of those children who have various <br />deficiencies throughout their entire lives. From that <br />standpoint, it saves dollars. <br />MOTION WAS MADE by Commissioner Lyons, SECONDED by <br />Commissioner Bowman, that the Board approve the <br />recommendation as set out in the above memo. <br />Under discussion, Commissioner Wodtke understood that other <br />agencies are using 185% of poverty guidelines, and he asked if <br />the recommended guidelines would qualify those women who cannot <br />62 <br />
