55 <br />PROCLAMATION <br />RECOGNIZING MARCH 22 THROUGH APRIL 3, 2016 AS <br />SAVE THE ST. JOHNS RIVER TOUR CAMPAIGN <br />WHEREAS, the St Johns is the longest river in Florida and one of our most important <br />natural resources. The expansive watershed of the St. Johns and its tributaries drains nearly <br />16% of the state and is home to almost 5 million people; and <br />WHEREAS, the St. Johns River faces significant threats from fertilizer runoff, failing septic <br />tanks, toxic algal blooms, industrial pollution, surface water withdrawals, urban sprawl, and <br />dredging; and <br />WHEREAS, our River is at a critical crossroad, with its future hanging in the balance. We <br />must act now to raise awareness about the numerous threats to the River's health, and <br />WHEREAS, by touring the 310 -mile length of the River from Blue Cypress Lake to <br />Jacksonville, the St. Johns Riverkeeper and partners will highlight the people, wildlife, beauty, <br />and recreational benefits that make the St. Johns worth fighting for. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that March 22 through April 3, <br />2016 signifies the "Save the St. Johns River Tour", and the Board commends the St. Johns <br />Riverkeeperfor its robust campaign to improve the health of the River. <br />Adopted this 15th day of March, 2016.
