He believed we <br />must define just how we are willing to participate, but he did <br />not want to become involved in any future power struggles as to <br />who runs that center. <br />Commissioner Bird noted that he could cite at length the <br />reasons as to why he feels the project is worthwhile; Gifford is <br />a unique part of the county and it was an unbelievable under- <br />taking for that community to raise $57,000 cash. <br />Commissioner Wheeler stated that he was not opposed to the <br />project, but in order to vote funds, he still felt he needed more <br />education. <br />Commissioner Bird continued to argue the need for a work- <br />shop, but Chairman Scurlock felt strongly that the Commission <br />should clearly define its position as to the level of participa- <br />tion we would anticipate; reaffirm that we will not accept the <br />deed to this property back; and convey this information to the <br />School Board so they can have their workshop and make their own <br />decisions. <br />Commissioner Bird stated the only area where he disagreed <br />with the Chairman was on the deed as he did feel this facility is <br />more in keeping with the county's functions than the School <br />Board's. <br />Commissioner Eggert stated she would agree except for the <br />fact that the funding is being obtained through the School Board. <br />MOTION WAS MADE by Commissioner Bowman, SECONDED by <br />Commissioner Eggert, to authorize the Chairman to write <br />Superintendent Burns advising that the County is willing <br />to contribute up to $50,000. site work for the center, to <br />contribute $10-$15:,000 for the first year operating ex- <br />penses and thereafter to consider an appropriation each <br />year at budget sessions, and reaffirm that the County <br />` does not wish to take back title to the property. <br />50 <br />
