to the District, which prefers that they go further out Route 60 <br />to the Maxey property which is almost on the edge of the county, <br />and that is where they are after almost four years. He, there- <br />fore, felt at this time we ought to go ahead and work with the <br />Sheriff on this stump dump site and have the availability for the <br />public to use it on a supervised basis as an interim range until <br />we can build the ultimate range somewhere else. <br />Commissioner Bird further advised that the Department of <br />Corrections has a new training facility here at Mueller Center, <br />and they are very much in need of a range. The D.O.C. has <br />advised him that they have about $18,000 earmarked for such a <br />facility, and they are willing to put funds towards this project. <br />Commissioner Bird believed that if we don't provide a safe <br />organized place for people to shoot, they will go out and shoot <br />anyway, and we need a supervised area. Possibly the public could <br />be allowed to use the range for certain set hours on a Saturday. <br />Administrator Balczun informed the Board that it is staff's <br />position that if the Board is inclined to approve the stump dump <br />property conceptually for a firearms range, the appropriate <br />action would be to refer this to the Planners to work on as there <br />are innumerable factors involved as set out in Planning Director <br />Keating's memo. <br />Sheriff Dobeck advised that he does not have a site plan at <br />present, but is just bringing this before the Commission to see <br />if it is, in fact, feasible. In regard to sharing the facility <br />with the public, the Sheriff noted that in the past they have <br />shared such a facility with the D.O.C. at the Youthful Offender <br />facility, and the Vero Beach Police Department also has been <br />cooperative. However, the very problem that has been following <br />them is related to sharing the range. They have about 226 people <br />carrying weapons, who are required to have training throughout <br />the year, and it has been very hard to schedule the hours for the <br />required training. <br />The Sheriff requested that the Commission allow staff to <br />27 <br />9 <br />" <br />BOOK 69 FAu-605 <br />
