Wheeler <br />Chairman <br />Marine Advisory Committee <br />DATE: January 14, 1988 FILE: <br />SUBJECT: Marine Advisory Committee <br />Recommendations <br />REFERENCES: <br />The Marine Advisory Committee made the following recommendations <br />at their January 7, 1988 meeting: <br />The Committee unanimously recommended that the County Commission <br />assess $4,000 as this County's portion of the cooperative effort <br />to do an aerial photography study of seagrass beds in the Indian <br />River Lagoon. <br />The Committee further unanimously recommended that the County <br />Commission send a Resolution to the Governor asking that the <br />Indian River Lagoon- be designated as an Estuary of National <br />Significance. <br />If the Indian River Lagoon is designated as an Estuary of <br />National Significance, funds may be available from the <br />Environmental Protection Agency for the implementation of our <br />programs for the protection and management of the Indian River <br />Lagoon. <br />Commissioner Wheeler introduced Diane Barite of the <br />Resources Council of East Central Florida, who will give <br />presentation, and also Dr. Robert Virnstein of Seagrass <br />Ecosystems Analysts. <br />Ms. Barile informed the Board that <br />appropriated funds for the Indian River <br />Improvement Management Bill (S.W.I.M.). <br />Marine <br />a <br />the State Legislature <br />under the Surface Water <br />Research on the river <br />has been going on for quite some time and about 2.1 million in <br />state and local funds have been spent on <br />strategies. Right now this estuary is a <br />studies and management <br />model for the rest of <br />the country, and Ms. Barite advised that they have been invited <br />all over the United States to explain how they came up with <br />strategies for the Indian River that people are willing to work <br />with and act upon. <br />Ms. Barite continued that there are three agenda items today <br />related to the Indian River river.
