TALLAHASSEE 32399.1650 <br />ANNUAL COOPERATIVE FORESTRY ASSISTANCE REPORT <br />City of Vero Beach and Indian River County <br />September 30, 1988 <br />As required under the provisions of the County Contract, sections 589.28 - <br />589.34 Florida Statutes, an annual report is submitted each fall to cover <br />work undertaken.during the past fiscal year. <br />As I have just recently assumed the Vero Beach/Indian River County Forester_ <br />position, I am submitting this report on my predecessors activities during: <br />the period from July 1, 1987 to June 30, 1988. <br />The following is a listing of some of the projects and programs the forester <br />became involved with in the past year: <br />City of Vero Beach <br />Annual Arbor Day Celebration <br />Tree City U.S.A. Award <br />Annual Seedling Sale <br />Beautification of Indian River Boulevard. <br />Miracle Mile Landscape Improvements <br />Indian River County <br />Involvement with County Parks and Recreation Committee <br />Gifford Park Tree Planting Program <br />Fellsmere Head Start Tree Planting Program <br />Assisted in revising the Landscape Ordinance <br />Assisted in Transplanting Trees at Citrus Elementary <br />Schools <br />Taught at the 5th Annual Forestry Training Camp <br />for Future Farmers of America <br />Assisted Vero Beach and_Sebastian Chapters of <br />Future Farmers of America <br />Taught numerous Environmental Education Classes at all levels. <br />Over the last fiscal year the Forester has assisted 1,255 individuals and <br />municipalities involving 1,523 hours of recordable time. <br />Activities were as follows: <br />1. Forest Management - 46 hours - 3% <br />a. Forest Landowner contacts: 9 contacts <br />b. Tree Planting: 5 acres <br />c. Christmas Tree Plantings: 1 acre <br />d. Watershed improvement: 3 Assists <br />2. Fire Control - 171 hours - 11% <br />a. Fire Control Officer -In -Charge: 34 assists <br />3. Forest Education - 103 hours - 72 <br />a. Environmental Education Classes: 8 classes, 330 attendees <br />b. Exhibits, Field Demonstrations: 10 exhibits and demonstrations <br />c. Speeches given: 10 speeches, 517 attendees <br />4. Media - 94 hours - 7% <br />a. Newspaper, magazine interviews: 2 interviews <br />b. Written material prepared - 24 news articles <br />c. TV, radio feature programs: 3 appearances <br />5. Urban Forestry - 637 hours - 412 <br />a. Arbor Day and School plantings: 9 programs, 19 trees <br />b. Tree Seedling Sales: 6 sales, 1350 trees <br />c. Tree Transplanting Assists: 9 assists, 11 trees <br />d. Noise Alatement projects: 1 project <br />e. Nursery Establishment: 2 tree nurseries established <br />f.
