Mr. Mercer informed the Board that James Chandler has <br />recently been City Manager of Hollywood, Florida. He believed <br />most candidates from south Florida are really interested in <br />getting out of that area. <br />Gregory Fehrenbach ig•f-rom East Brunswick, N.J., which is a <br />rapidly growing Township located near Princeton and Rutgers, and <br />also near the Township of Ocean, which is a very affluent suburb. <br />Mr. Mercer noted that while Mr. Fehrenbach does come from a <br />smaller jurisdiction, he is very competent and respected by his <br />peers. <br />Commissioner Wheeler questioned the fact that some of the <br />candidates have made higher salaries than we are offering. <br />Mr. Mercer confirmed that they all understand the salary <br />range, and there are any number of reasons why they are <br />interested. Craig McDowell, for instance, earned $94,000 as City <br />Manager of Corpus Christi, Texas, and was asked to resign <br />basically for political reasons; there was no reflection on his <br />technical qualifications. He was there for 2 to 3 years and also <br />was county manager of Pima County, Arizona, for a long period of <br />time; he is now a consultant. <br />Commissioner Eggert asked if a resume doesn't state they are <br />married and have a family whether we should assume they don't. <br />Mr. Mercer noted that is a difficult question to ask now <br />because it is discriminatory to some degree. He did confirm that <br />they have done a rather substantive amount of background checks <br />on all of these individuals, but they are ready and willing to do <br />further checks if the Board desires. <br />Mr. Mercer continued that William Furtwangler has most <br />recently been County Administrator of Charleston County, S.C. He <br />has spent most of his career in that particular jurisdiction, and <br />he also has coastal management experience. <br />Dora Harrison is in Pinellas County on the west coast of <br />Florida, a large urban county.
