GOVERNOR'S DRUG FREE COMMUNITIES GRANT PROGRAM <br />The Board reviewed the following memo dated 10/11/89: <br />TO: Members of the Board <br />of County Commissioners <br />DATE: October 11, 1989 <br />SUBJECT: GOVERNOR'S DRUG FREE <br />COMMUNITIES GRANT PROGRAM <br />FROM: Joseph A. Baird <br />OMB Director <br />DESCRIPTION AND CONDITIONS <br />The federal Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, at the discretion <br />of the Governor's Office, provides non-matching grant funds to local <br />communities and non-profit agencies for the purpose of developing <br />substance abuse prevention services targeted to high risk youths <br />(those under 21 and with high risk factors - such as school dropouts, <br />pregnant, children of abusers, etc.). Potential grantees are <br />required to submit a proposal to the Governor's Office outlining a <br />program objective that addresses: <br />a. The service to be provided with the funds, such <br />as referral or counseling. <br />1a <br />;Pat Callahan, Recreation Director, submitted an application a few <br />days ago for $50,000.00. The proposal involves creating an after <br />.' school program for Middle Six and Seven schools. <br />The outcome of the service to be provided. <br />c. Improvements within the overall system - i.e. <br />enhancement of existing services. <br />• <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Staff recommends that the Board authorized the use of the grant for <br />programs at the Middle Six and Seven schools. <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Bird, SECONDED by <br />Commissioner Eggert, the Board unanimously (4-0, <br />Commissioner Scurlock being absent) authorized the <br />use of the subject grant for programs at the Middle <br />Six and Seven schools. <br />Commissioner Bird commended Pat Callahan for pursuing this <br />program. <br />oDCT <br />41 <br />BOOK. 18 4:,F.1 0 <br />
