LAWS OF FLORIDA 2187 <br /> Beginning with the election held in December, 1929, a Mayor shall <br /> be elected for the term of two years. <br /> Section 14. That all officers of the City of Vero Beach shall hold <br /> office until their successors are elected or appointed and qualified. <br /> Section 15. Each officer of the City as soon as convenient after <br /> his appointment or election shall take before the Mayor or before <br /> any person authorized to administer oaths, an oath or affirmation <br /> that he will support, protect and defend the Constitution and gov- <br /> ornment of the United States and of the State of Florida against all <br /> enemies, domestic or foreign, and that he will bear true faith, <br /> loyalty and allegiance to the same and that he is entitled to hold <br /> office under the Constitution and laws of the State of Florida, and <br /> that ho will faithfully perform the duties of the office on which he <br /> is about to enter. <br /> Section 16. Said corporation shall have perpetual succession, <br /> may sue and be sued, plead and he impleaded, and shall have a com- <br /> mon seal which may be changed by the City Council at pleasure. <br /> Section 17. Said corporation may own, purchase, lease, receive; <br /> acquire and hold property, real and personal, within and without <br /> the territorial boundaries of said corporation to be used for any <br /> and all such public purposes as the City Council may deem neces- <br /> sary and proper, and that said corporation is hereby fully empow- <br /> ered to sell, lease, convey and otherwise dispose of any and all prop- <br /> erty, real and personal, which may belong to said corporation, and . <br /> the City Council shall prescribe by ordinance the manner of making <br /> such conveyance. Provided, however, that the electric light and <br /> power plant and/or-waterworks and/or any other public utilities <br /> owned or operated by said City shall never be sold, leased or other- <br /> wise disposed of unless such sale, lease or disposal shall first be rat- <br /> ifled, approved and confirmed by a majority vote of the qualified <br /> electors of said City who are freeholders, voting at an election duly <br /> called and held for such purpose in accordance with the rules and <br /> regulations of said City providing for the holding of general elec- <br /> tions therein. <br /> Section 18. The City Council shall by ordinance provide for the <br /> holding of all general and special elections and for the return and <br /> canvass of the same and for the registration of voters. <br /> Section 19. The Mayor shall have the power to preserve peace <br /> and order and to enforce the ordinances of said City and shall have <br /> such powers and duties as are conferred upon him by ordinance. <br /> His compensation shall be fixed by ordinance and shall not be <br /> changed during his term of office.
