M - <br />and sometimes because of -that we don't get listened to as much. <br />He emphasized that we believe strongly in the Plan we adopted; we <br />had vigorous debate during a variety of public hearings; he felt <br />very comfortable with the Plan we adopted; and he believed we did <br />make some compromises in an effort to get it approved. He, <br />therefore, would support whatever resources are necessary to <br />support our Plan as it was conveyed. <br />Chairman Eggert advised that she has talked with Paul <br />Bradshaw of the DCA and pointed out to him that we were pulled <br />into the Hutchinson Island Plan; that we are a county that has <br />tried very hard to control its growth and stay ahead of things <br />and be a very responsible county, and still we are being treated <br />just like every other county in Florida where there is none of <br />our uniqueness and special care. We have Brevard County above us <br />and St. Lucie below us, and we are in here trying to hold our <br />own, but we seem to be given no recognition for that. <br />Commissioner Scurlock noted that he can understand the urban <br />sprawl concept; however, our community and our constituency has <br />supported low density and low rise, and that is the constant <br />message they have conveyed to us. Yes, there is an additional <br />cost for infrastructure with lower densities, but our community <br />has indicated they are willing to pay that additional amount to <br />have that kind of low density, low rise growth. He agreed we <br />should have concurrency, but finds it very difficult to say that <br />the state knows more about our community than we do. We have a <br />long range water and sewer plan; we have a long range transporta- <br />tion plan, a long range re -use plan, etc., and as long as we <br />provide for all this, he felt they should pay attention to the <br />local community. <br />Commissioner Bird agreed, and also agreed that we should put <br />together the proper team we need to convince the DCA of this. He <br />wanted the staff to hear this and be as committed on this thing <br />as we are because he believed we are still the bosses of the <br />staff and that's the approach he wants to take and he wants it to <br />37 BOOK vE a <br />� APR 101990 J <br />
