JUDICIAL MEETING IN FT. PIERCE RE PRE-TRIAL INTERVENTION PROGRAM <br />The Board reviewed the following memo dated 11/21/90: <br />Public Works <br />Community Dev. <br />TO: Board of County Commissioners UtilitiesFinance <br />Other <br />FROM: Gary C. Wheeler, Commissioner <br />DATE: November 21, 1990 (dictated 11/20/90) <br />RE: PRE-TRIAL INTERVENTION PROGRAM <br />On Monday, November 19, 1990, the County Attorney and I <br />were Invited by Judge Charles E. Smith to attend a <br />meeting of law enforcement officials in St. Lucie <br />County to consider methods of improving the criminal <br />justice system. In particular, the Judge and a court <br />consultant from American University, Washington, D.C., <br />suggested a pilot program by which first-time drug <br />offenders could be kept out of jail, provided the <br />offender met certain counseling, educational, and drug <br />testing standards. <br />In this: regard, the persons attending this meeting <br />created an advisory committee to be composed of one <br />county commissioner from each of the four counties, the <br />four sheriffs of the four counties, the State Attorney, <br />the Public Defender, the Court Administrator, the Chief <br />Probation Officer, and the Chief Judge of the circuit. <br />The Chief Judge was elected chairman and will call <br />meetings of this committee. <br />It is necessary that each Board of County Commissioners <br />appoint one of the commissioners to this committee, and <br />1 would be willing to serve in that capacity If the <br />Board so desires. <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Scurlock, SECONDED by <br />Commissioner Bowman, the Board unanimously appointed <br />Commissioner Wheeler to serve on a advisory committee <br />in connection with the Pre -Trial Intervention Program. <br />� V ew% 3 3 _BOOK 81 FACE 9 d" <br />
