PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING NOVEMBER, 1991 <br />AS NATIONAL HOSPICE MONTH IDT <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />WHEREAS, hospice care has been demonstrated to be a <br />humanitarian way for terminally ill patients to approach the end <br />of Lheir liven in relative comfort with sppropria.te, competent, <br />and compassionate care in an environment of personal <br />individuality and dignity; and <br />WHEREAS, the hospice concept advocates care of the patient <br />and family by attending to their physical, emotional, social, and <br />spiritual needs; and <br />WHEREAS, hospice care is provided by an interdisciplinary <br />team of physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, <br />psychological and spiritual counselors, and community volunteers <br />trained in the hospice concept of care; and <br />WHEREAS, -hospice care is proving to be an -effective and <br />economical alternative to unnecessary institutionalization 'for <br />many terminally ill people; and <br />WHEREAS, hospice care is rapidly becoming a full partner in <br />the nation's health care delivery system; and <br />WHEREAS, the enactment of a hospice benefit under Medicare, <br />which became effective November 1, 1983, 'makes it possible for <br />many more -elderly Americans to have the opportunity to elect -t6 <br />receive hospice care; and <br />WHEREAS, -there remains a great need to increase public <br />awareness of the benefits of hospice cares <br />." NOW, THEREFORE <br />;BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS; INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, .FLORIDA that the month of <br />November, 1991 be designated as <br />NATIONAL HOSPICE MONTH <br />in Indian River County, and the Board calls on all governmental <br />agencies, the medical community, churches and community <br />organizations to participate in appropriate forums, programs, and <br />activities designed to encourage countywide recognition of and <br />support for hospice, care as a humane response to the needs of <br />terminally ill people and their families, and as a viable <br />component of the healthcare delivery system in this county. <br />Adopted this 5 day of November, 1991. <br />3 <br />NMI, �, �� <br />BOARD•OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />INDIAN.RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />Richard N.
