As a result of this - <br />effort and the fact that only one bid. was. received, .the <br />Consultant and County staff would normally recommend that <br />the project be re -bid. However, the US Coast Guard Aids to <br />Navigation Branch in Miami has informed the County that it <br />is critical to replace the timber fender system as soon as <br />possible. The timber structure is rapidly deteriorating and <br />falling into the intracoastal waterway..: channel. <br />Navigational lights on the fenders cannot be kept in working <br />condition. This situation places the entire bridge in <br />jeopardy if a large vessel wandered off course As recently <br />happened in Fort Pierce. _ <br />The contractor has indicated that if the County disposes of <br />the old timber structure, a substantial savings would <br />.•result. Staff is trying to determine the amount of savings <br />at this time. <br />88 <br />
