Proclamation - Drunk and Drugged_ Driver_ Awareness Week <br />PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING DECEMBER 7 - 13, 1991 <br />AS DRUNK AND DRUGGED DRIVER AWARENESS WEEK <br />IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />WHEREAS, driving under the influence (DLII) of alcohol or <br />controlled substances resulted in 1,365 fatalities and 32,811 <br />injuries on Florida's highways in 1990; and <br />WHEREAS, it is estimated that one-half of. all Florida <br />boating 'fatalities resulted from people operating boats while <br />under the influence of alcohol and drugs (OUI); and <br />WHEREAS, the Indian River County Sheriff's Office, Florida <br />Highway Patrol, Florida Marine Patrol, Florida Game and Fresh <br />Water Fish Commission, Florida Office of. Motor Carrier <br />Compliance, and local. police departments throughout the state <br />have exhibited leadership in protecti:tg the public from the DUI <br />and OUI problem; and <br />WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation, Safety <br />Office, is providing assistance in the development of community- <br />based traffic safety programs with DUI emphasis; and <br />WHEREAS, citizen advocacy groups are increasing their <br />efforts to reduce the incidence of driving under the influence <br />and operating under the influence in Florida; and <br />WHEREAS, the use of alcohol and controlled substances while <br />operating motor vehicles and boats can gest be combatted by local <br />communities and an informed citizenry that understands the perils <br />of operating motor vehicles and boats while impaired and the <br />penalties that are imposed by Florida's DUI and OUI Statutes: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, AE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the week of <br />December 7-13, 1991, shall be designated as <br />DRUNK AND DRUGGED DRIVING AWARENESS WEEK <br />in Indian River bounty, and all citizens are urged to become more <br />cognizant of: the dangers associated with intoxicated drivers and <br />boat operators and to support the fight against driving while <br />under the influence of alcohol and other drugs on our highways <br />and waterways. <br />Dated this 26 day of November, 1991 <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />RICI ARU IV.
