BOX 2947 <br />June 12, 1992 <br />Indian River County Commissioners <br />1840 25th Street <br />Vero Beach, FL 32960 <br />Dear Commissioners, <br />32961 407-567-3491 FAX: 407-778-3181 <br />DISTRIBUTION LIST <br />Commissioners CSE <br />Administrator <br />Attorney <br />Personnel <br />Public Works <br />Community Dev. <br />Utilities <br />Finance <br />Other <br />The Board of Directors of the Vero Beach -Indian River County <br />Chamber of Commerce by a unanimous vote taken June 8, 1992 urges <br />the Commission to reconsider your recommendation to the <br />Department of Natural Resources regarding boating restrictions in <br />Indian River County. <br />We feel the proposal previously approved by the Commission would <br />be detrimental to our area for several reasons: <br />1) Indian River County has a proven record of low manatee <br />mortality for the past 17 years. <br />2) Lowering the boating speed in the majority of the river <br />to 5 mph will give a negative impression to those vacationing or <br />relocating in our area. <br />3) Recreational boaters and fishermen would be forced into <br />the intracoastal waterway and skiers will be limited to smaller <br />congested areas all of which lead to definite human safety <br />concerns. <br />4) We should not be "categorized" with other regions that <br />have been less responsible and we should not accept being painted <br />with the same broad, restrictive brush. <br />Manatee protection and survival'in the waters of Indian River <br />County has always been important and will continue to be.
