'Vero Beach is the Seat of the County f ' ; <br /> government. The current population of Indian River County is <br /> _ 4 <br /> 143,326 and the median age in the County is 50.5. Indian Diver <br /> County is located on the central Atlantic Coast of Florida, <br /> approximately 100 miles southeast of Orlando and 135 miles <br /> north of Miami. The County is bordered by Brevard County to `t <br /> the north, St. Lucie County to the south, and Osceola and _..__...v ....T <br /> Okeechobee Counties to the west. ' There are approximately 100 <br /> miles of waterfront land in the county, including 23 miles of <br /> Atlantic beaches. The comfortable climate provides the basis for <br /> year-round enjoyment of the beaches, Indian River Lagoon, <br /> County parks, Sebastian Inlet State Park, and the Pelican Island } <br /> National Wildlife Refuge by both residents and tourists. <br /> Indian River County provides a full range of services including, <br /> but not limited to: construction and maintenance of roadways, <br /> W <br /> sidewalks and other infrastructure, fire rescue/emergency <br /> services, law enforcement, library services, traffic operations and <br /> control, parks and recreational services, human services, building <br /> inspections, licenses and permits, water/sewer utility services, and <br /> refuse collection and disposal. <br /> i <br /> The waterways in and around Indian River County are teeming <br /> with a large variety of unique aquatic animals including <br /> manatees, sea turtles, sharks, dolphins, and rays(shown at left). <br /> Photo courtesy oflndianRiverByAir.com <br /> 2 <br />
