Pierce indicate that <br />sustained winds reached 27 mph, and peak wind gusts were <br />up to 37 mph. Rain meters in Ft. Pierce indicated 1.97 inches <br />of rainfall during this period. <br />Hurricane Frances of September 2004. This <br />hurricane made landfall over the southern end of Hutchinson <br />Island, Florida as a Category 2 hurricane. Frances gradually <br />weakened as it moved slowly west -northwestward across the <br />Florida Peninsula, and became a tropical storm just before <br />emerging into the northeastern Gulf of Mexico near New Port <br />Richey early on 6 September. The National Weather Service <br />Melbourne Weather Forecast Office (WFO) estimated storm <br />surge at 8 ft near Vero Beach and 6 ft around Cocoa Beach. <br />Frances caused widespread heavy rains and associated <br />freshwater flooding over much of the eastern United States. <br />Storm -total rainfalls of 5-10 in were common elsewhere along <br />Frances' track as a tropical cyclone. Frances caused an <br />estimated $850 million in damage to insured property in Indian <br />River County. The storm spawned a total of 101 tornadoes — <br />23 in Florida. Sustained winds reached 105 mph. There was <br />one fatality recorded in Indian River County. <br />Hurricane Jeanne of September 2004. Jeanne made <br />landfall as a Category 3 hurricane on the east coast of Florida <br />early on September 26 with the center crossing the coast at <br />the southern end of Hutchinson Island just east of Stuart. <br />Maximum winds at landfall are estimated at 121 mph. <br />Widespread rainfall of up to 8 inches accompanied Hurricane <br />Jeanne as it moved across eastern, central and northern <br />Florida. A narrower band of 11 to 13 inches was observed in <br />the vicinity of the eyewall track over Osceola, Broward and <br />Indian River counties of east central Florida. Storm surge <br />flooding of up to 6 ft above normal tides likely occurred along <br />the Florida east coast from the vicinity of Melbourne southward <br />to Ft. Pierce. Jeanne caused an estimated $2 billion in damage <br />to insured property Indian River County. <br />Hurricane Wilma of October 2005. Wilma made <br />landfall in southwestern Florida near Cape Romano as a <br />Category 3 hurricane on October 24 with sustained winds <br />estimated to be around 120 mph.
