EMERGENCY ADDITIU <br />OCLAMATI ®MAY 3,201 <br />Il 0N PROCLAMATIONS ITEM 5i <br />Recognizing May 1, 2016 as the <br />50th Anniversary of the IRC Volunteer Ambulance Squad <br />WHEREAS, prior to 1966, all emergency ambulance services in Indian River County were <br />provided by local funeral homes The Indian River County Volunteer Ambulance Squad held its first <br />committee meeting in March of 1966, raised over 100 volunteers, and made its first official run on May 1, <br />1966; and <br />WHEREAS, from 1966 to 1989, the Squad, manned exclusively by volunteers, provided <br />basic life support care and transport to the residents of Indian River County. Units were organized into <br />four 6 -hour shifts in order to provide the community with full 24-hour a day service, funded solely by <br />donations; and <br />WHEREAS, in 1989, Indian River County finally integrated advanced life support into the <br />county through the use of paramedics, eliminating the need for volunteer emergency transportation <br />services However, the Volunteer Ambulance squad still continues to provide non -emergency <br />transportation to residents in need of medical treatment completely free of charge; and <br />WHEREAS, the Volunteer Ambulance squad continues its tradition of public service providing <br />non -emergency transportation services to the residents of Indian River County in need of medical <br />treatment. Through their efforts over 67,500 trips have been provided to the residents in the past 5 years, <br />_....driving over 632,000 miles with over 14,000 trips in 2015. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that May 1, 2016 commemorates the 501h <br />Anniversary of the Indian River County Volunteer Ambulance Squad, and the Board commends the <br />Squad and its dedicated volunteers for the services they provide to the residents of the County. <br />Adopted this 3rd day of May, 2016. <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />Bob Solari, Chairman <br />Joseph E.
