Background (Cont.) <br />Sand sources offshore of Miami -Dade County are almost <br />depleted. <br />• Approximately 3.6 Million cubic yards of sand is needed to <br />complete two beach projects over the next 23 years. <br />• In compliance with the National Environmental Policy <br />Act (NEPA), the USACE prepared a draft Environmental <br />Assessment (EA) to evaluate removing the identified 5.2 <br />Million cubic yards of sand from St. Lucie and Martin <br />Counties and relocate down to Miami -Dade County. <br />• On March 8, 2016, the USACE Jacksonville District issued <br />a Findings of No Significant Impact (FONSI) authorizing <br />removal and relocation of St. Lucie and Martin County <br />sand. <br />Description and Conditions <br />On April 18, 2016, staff discussed the issuance of the <br />FONSI with the IRC Beach Committee. <br />Concerns that removal of beach quality sand from St. <br />Lucie and Martin Counties could negatively affect <br />IRC's beach program led to the following <br />unanimously approved Beach Committee motion... <br />5/10/2016 <br />1-�3•2 <br />
